Dorper production commenced in August, 1999 with the purchase of a sire from the Paramount stud. The resulting commercial flock based at “Bellanboe” Tenterfield was awarded many broad ribbons in carcass competitions.
In 1999, a move to White Dorpers began with the acquisition of a ram from the Saltbush Stud inSouth Australia. He descends from Peet Cilliers Boude (world record price ram R250,000) out of a Dries Wiese ewe.April 2000 saw the arrival of 2 White Dorper ewes from the Silver Springs, Ogilvie, Western Australia for an E.T. programme by Dr Ced Wise in 2001.
A major upgrade to Darling Downs Dorpers Stud resulted from the purchase of Edson 379 from Back Creek White Dorpers. Edson 379 is the Champion 4 tooth ram 2005 Dubbo National Dorper Show, Senior Champion ram 2006 National Dorper Show and the Supreme White Dorper Exhibit 2006.
In November, 2006 an ET programme using this sire with Saltbush bred ewes, Allambie Stud ewes and Highveld Stud ewes made these Elite Genetics available inQueenslandfor the first time.
Dr Fransois Marais conducted E.T. programmes in 2007 using Edson 379 with Darling Downs, Etiwanda and Back Creek ewes. Frozen embyros imported fromKasteel Stud,South Africarounded out the programme.
Further genetic gain was achieved with Dr Lorroi Kirkby and Justin Kirkby using a Castlereagh ram which was a champion ram, Sydney Royal Easter Show 2009 and Terraweena 9009 son of Terraweena 7113 one of the industry’s most profile sires of show champions.
At all times this careful genetic selection aims to yield early maturing animals – with ease of lambing, shedding quailities, high fertility and the ability to finish on pasture.
